Mesmo diante da pandemia, a MTV não desistiu de produzir as premiações do VMA, pelo contrário, se adaptou à situação atual do mundo.
O evento contou com apresentações que foram transmitidas no sistema Drive-in em Nova York e pelo canal da MTV. Dentre as atrações, estiveram: BTS – Dynamite (primeira performance da música), Miley Cyrus – Midnight Sky, Maluma – Hawái, CNCO – Beso, Chloe X Halle – Ungodly Hour, e Keke Palmer, que não só apresentou o VMA, a cantora também performou seu novo single Snack.
